The short answer: playing Teen Patti for free chips is allowed, and playing it for real money online is banned across India. That has been the position since the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 came into force on 1 May 2026. The rest of this post explains what the law covers, what it means for an app like Teen Patti Master, and what to do if you already have money inside one.

This is general information, not legal advice. Laws change, and a lawyer can advise on your own situation.

What the law bans

Parliament passed the Act in August 2025 and it received Presidential assent on 22 August 2025. Its main points:

  • Online money games are banned. Any online game where you pay or deposit money hoping to win more is covered, whether it is called a game of skill or a game of chance. Card games played for cash, including Teen Patti and Rummy, fall inside the ban.
  • Advertising them is banned. That covers ads, sponsorships and paid promotion.
  • Banks and payment services may not process payments for them. Deposits and withdrawals for money games are not supposed to go through.
  • E-sports and online social games are allowed. The Act separates these from money games and supports them.

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026 were notified on 22 April 2026 and took effect on 1 May 2026. They set up the Online Gaming Authority of India, which classifies games and oversees platforms.

Who the penalties are aimed at

The Act treats players as the people it is protecting. Its penalties fall on operators who offer money games, on people who advertise or promote them, and on those who process their payments. That does not make money play safe for players. If an app refuses a withdrawal or shuts down, you have very little protection, because the business itself is outside the law.

Several states also had their own bans before the central Act, including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Sikkim, Nagaland and Meghalaya.

It depends on how you use it.

How you play Status
Free chips, no money paid in or taken out An online social game. Allowed
Buying chips with real money and cashing out winnings An online money game. Banned
Tournaments or bonuses that need a deposit Money play. Banned

The app itself is a piece of software. What the law looks at is whether money changes hands. If a table asks you to deposit to play, or promises cash winnings, that table is offering a money game, and we recommend you do not use it.

The Supreme Court challenge

Companies affected by the ban challenged the Act in several High Courts. In September 2025 the Supreme Court transferred those cases to itself. The case is still pending, and the ban applies unless the Court rules otherwise. The Supreme Court Observer case page tracks hearings and is the easiest place to check the latest position.

If money is stuck in an app

Since the ban, many players have found balances they cannot withdraw. If that is you:

  1. Take screenshots now. Record your balance, your transaction history and any messages from the app, with dates.
  2. Use the app's own support, inside the app. Keep the replies.
  3. Never pay to "unlock" a withdrawal. Requests for a tax, a verification fee or a "release charge" before you can withdraw are a standard scam.
  4. Ignore anyone who contacts you offering recovery, on WhatsApp, Telegram or social media. Real support never asks for your UPI PIN, OTP or card details.
  5. Report fraud on the national cyber crime portal at cybercrime.gov.in or by calling the 1930 helpline.

Do not add more money to try to reach a withdrawal threshold. That is how a stuck balance gets bigger.

Frequently asked questions

Is Teen Patti legal in India?

Playing Teen Patti with friends for fun, or online with free chips, is legal. Playing it online for real money is banned across India under the Online Gaming Act, 2025.

Is it illegal for me to play money games, or only for the app?

The Act's penalties target operators, promoters and payment providers. It treats players as victims. Even so, you have almost no protection if a money app refuses to pay, and some states have their own gambling laws.

When did the online money game ban start?

The Act received Presidential assent on 22 August 2025. Its rules took effect on 1 May 2026.

Why can't I withdraw from Teen Patti Master?

Banks and payment services are barred from processing payments for online money games, so withdrawals may be blocked. Never pay a fee to release a withdrawal, as that is a common scam.

Has the Supreme Court struck down the Online Gaming Act?

Not as of this update. The challenge is pending before the Supreme Court and the ban applies in the meantime.
